We at Frank’s Basement Systems are partnering with our sister companies, Mr. Plumber Heating and Cooling, and Frank’s Dr. Energy Saver, to form Frank’s Commercial Services. This coming Thursday, Frank’s Basement Systems and Mr. Plumber Heating and Cooling will be at the Facilities Management Expo.

Mr. Plumber Heating and Cooling will highlight our plumbing work and how we engage in general plumbing repair, as well as full office remodeling, by providing full plumbing, heating and cooling installation. We also work hand-in-hand with Frank’s Dr. Energy Saver, to bring entire commercial properties up to optimal energy usage and conservation.

Frank’s Basement Systems will be highlighting our structural restoration, complete commercial waterproofing and drainage systems, and commercial foundation support solutions.

We're at Canal Fest this week!!

Living in Western New York, there are an endless stream of local events celebrating each season, and let's face it, there's a nod to summer just about every day during our short months of hot weather. This year my companies; Frank's Basement Systems, Mr. Plumber, and Frank's Dr. Energy Saver, are geared up to participate in several of our outdoor traditions.

We started with Ride for Roswell and continue the celebration at the Canal Fest. For those of you not from our area, canal Fest is a week-long celebration, attracting over 200,000 people to participate in all the events. The Canal Fest runs along the Erie Barge Canal and the mighty Niagara River, where North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda meet.

With temperatures in the high 80's, low 90's, we set up a "Rest Stop" for people to cool off by our fans and mist themselves off by our sprinklers. Stop by any of the great vendors surrounding us and grab a bite, bring it over by us and eat at one of our tables...refreshed and full, you'll be ready to take the kids on all the rides, shop at all the tents or maybe even participate in some of the fun water events happening all week.

Tuesday's event highlight is the CANAL FEST PARADE!!

I know what it is like to feel like I got my life back. I lost over 150 pounds and went from having a hard time catching my breath, a hard time walking, and even a hard time sleeping, to feeling healthy, active, and alive again! That is why I am spending June 23rd, celebrating life by joining Roswell Park Cancer Institute in their "Ride for Roswell" bike race.

I'll be riding a 33-mile route with thousands of other riders. I won't be coming in first, not even close, but I'll be feeling strong and healthy. Alongside me, will be other riders joining together for a wonderful day. A few of the riders have decided to join my team: "Frank's Ride for Roswell". I invite you to ride with us; it can be as little as 3 miles or as much as 100 miles.

Raising funds for cancer research and patient care, the event features nine available routes from three to 100 miles open to cyclists of all abilities and with all kinds of bikes. To celebrate everyone’s accomplishment, a delicious lunch party follows the ride.

The earth around your home is the source of enormous pressure on your foundation walls – particularly when that soil is weighed down with water. This slow buildup of water increases the water pressing in against the structure considerably. From the inside, however, nothing is pushing back. When the pressure from the outside exceeds the bearing strength of the wall, the walls will begin to slide in at the bottom, lean in at the top, or bulge in the middle.

A Water Alarm System: Many homeowners choose to install a water alarm in their basement, which will sound off when water is present. Modern water alarms are often included with sump pump systems, and the best ones can even be hooked up to a home alarm system – so you get a phone call when a problem arises.

A Few Simple Precautions You Can Take To Help Avoid A Flood

There are worse things that can happen to your home than a serious plumbing failure -- but there aren't many. When a pipe or other plumbing feature bursts, you may have an unlimited quantity of pressurized water flowing into your home.

Immediately, floodwater can completely destroy computers, electronics, books, photographs, furniture, and countless other personal items. Within 24-48 hours, mold may also begin to grow on water-damaged items, wallboard, carpet, insulation, and other personal items. If allowed to continue unchecked, this can lead to enormous repair costs!

If you could make a few small purchases that would significantly decrease the chances of this happening, wouldn't you do so? If your property and personal items are worth protecting, we recommend these three simple, inexpensive upgrades:

1. Install New, Heavy-Duty Washer Hoses

More often than not, homeowners have light-duty washer hoses installed. These black, flimsy hoses are designed to handle the 50psi of pressure they're under for periods of time only. If you're not turning your water off each time you're done with your wash, then you're using these hoses beyond their design parameters.

What's At Risk: Once these hoses burst open, they can send up to 500 gallons of water flowing into your basement each hour! If you don't come home for several hours, this can become extremely serious – we've even seen basements flooded up to the windows!

2. Install A Battery Backup Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump system installed in your home, you know (possibly all too well) that that pump is the only thing standing between you and a flooded basement. And, unfortunately, like all things mechanical, it's doomed to eventual breakdown.

A battery backup system has multiple functions in a wet basement. Yes, it can kick on when there's a power outage, but it's also a second line of defense if the primary pump clogs, overheats, has a faulty float switch, or experiences a mechanical failure. It'll also be there during those torrential downpours, when the water volume entering the system is too much for your primary system.

What's At Risk: When a basement is flooding, it's no longer usable space in your home. Flooding will damage and/or destroy nearly everything stored there, including your washer, drier, furnace, and other appliances. Compared to these losses, the installation of a reliable backup pump is a very small investment.

3. Protect Yourself Against Water Heater Failure

Water heaters aren't made to life forever. Over the course of the life of your home, there can be many tank-type water heaters. Typically, a system will last for about seven years before breaking down.

Since water heaters refill automatically when empty, the flooding never stops when one fails. Installing a water alarm near the water heater is a great way to ensure a fast alert when a failure occurs. A talented waterproofer can even tie your water heater into a perimeter drainage system – so any flooding water is directed to your sump pump.

What's At Risk: That depends on where your water heater is located. If the system is located upstairs and has to leak through your floor before collecting in a basement or crawl space, you could be looking at some serious water damage – particularly if the leak persists for several weeks before noticed. In a crawl space, water heaters can leak for months before it's discovered – creating a damp environment that can lead to rotting joists and girders, and even structural damage. In more extreme flooding cases, this water can build up to several feet before it's noticed.
